Quick answer

How do you calculate the true monthly cost of a car?

Add the finance or lease payment to insurance, energy, servicing, tyres, repairs, parking, tolls and other recurring costs. Convert annual or occasional bills into monthly allowances so the result represents one comparable month.

Monthly cash budget is not the same as economic cost

This calculator measures the money you should reserve each month. It deliberately keeps depreciation separate. A paid-off car can have no finance payment but may still lose value and require a larger repair reserve.

Keeping these ideas separate makes comparisons clearer. Use this result for affordability and cash flow, then consider resale value when comparing ownership or lease options.

Complete monthly cash budgetpayment + insurance + energy + servicing + tyres + repairs + other costs

Annual budget = complete monthly budget × 12.

Five costs that are often underestimated

  • Insurance: use a quote for the exact vehicle and driver.
  • Tyres: divide the expected replacement cost by the months of use.
  • Repairs: keep a reserve even when no repair is currently due.
  • Charging: blend home, workplace and public charging prices.
  • Parking and road charges: include permits, tolls and local fees.

Worked example: a financed used car

A payment of 320, insurance of 75, energy of 140 and 155 for servicing, tyres, repairs, parking and other costs produce a complete budget of 690 per month, or 8,280 per year. The payment represents less than half of the amount that must be supported by the household budget.

For another income-based scenario, read how a $500 car payment can become a $930 complete monthly cost.

Frequently asked questions

What should a complete monthly car cost include?

Include the finance or lease payment, insurance, fuel or charging, servicing, tyres, a repair reserve, parking, tolls, road charges and any other recurring vehicle cost.

How do I enter annual servicing or insurance?

Divide an annual bill by 12 before entering it. For irregular repairs, use a realistic monthly reserve based on the vehicle’s age, condition and service history.

Does this calculator include depreciation?

No. This tool focuses on the cash budget leaving your account. Depreciation is an economic cost and should be considered separately when comparing ownership options.
