How the French carte grise price is calculated
For an ordinary private car, the starting point is the regional price of one fiscal CV multiplied by the vehicle’s fiscal horsepower. The regional tax is rounded to the nearest euro before the fixed management tax and delivery fee are added.
Any age or regional clean-vehicle reduction is applied to the regional tax before the fixed fees are added.

The regional tax is reduced by 50% for an eligible vehicle aged at least ten years. The €11 management tax and €2.76 delivery fee remain unchanged.
A 6 CV car in Grand Est therefore falls from €360 to €180 of regional tax, producing an ordinary total of €193.76.
French used car, new car or imported car: separate the charges
A French-registered used car changing keeper does not normally receive a new first-registration malus. A new or imported vehicle can trigger separate CO₂ and weight taxes when it is first registered in France.
The calculator on this page does not estimate those malus charges. Use the French new, used and imported vehicle malus simulator and then confirm the complete total through the official French service.
What this French registration estimate does not include
The certificate can contain several taxes and one delivery charge. A CO₂ malus, weight malus, professional-vehicle tax, administrative change, exemption or special vehicle category can alter the final amount.

Frequently asked questions
What is a carte grise in France?
Carte grise is the common name for the certificat d’immatriculation, the French vehicle registration certificate.
How is the French registration cost calculated in 2026?
For a standard private car, the main regional tax is the region’s price per fiscal horsepower multiplied by the vehicle’s fiscal horsepower. A €11 management tax and €2.76 delivery fee are then normally added. Other taxes may apply.
Where can I find the vehicle’s fiscal horsepower?
The puissance administrative, measured in CV, appears in field P.6 of a French registration certificate. It is not the engine’s mechanical horsepower or kW output.
Is registration half price when a car is over 10 years old?
The regional tax receives a 50% reduction for an eligible vehicle aged 10 years or more. The fixed management and delivery fees are not halved.
Is a French carte grise free for an electric car?
There is no longer one nationwide answer. The treatment depends on the region. This calculator applies the 50% clean-vehicle regional-tax reduction announced for Hauts-de-France in 2026.
Does the result include the French CO₂ or weight malus?
No. A new or imported vehicle may trigger separate CO₂ and weight taxes on first registration in France. Those amounts require a separate malus calculation.
Can I use this estimate for an imported vehicle?
It estimates the ordinary regional and fixed registration charges. An imported car may also involve a malus, age reductions, tax evidence and other administrative rules, so confirm the final amount with the official simulator.
